New voter Alexis Harris, 26, is hoping for change this election. She filled out a voter registration form and worked hard to register others in her community to vote. “This is my first time voting. I’m very excited,” she says. “Everybody’s excited about this election and positive about the change that’s going to occur.”
Harris says that voters in Gary want to see the new president address the economic hardships many Americans are facing. “We’re hoping for better healthcare, better employment… It’s a long list.”
Despite the long lines at polling places in Gary, Harris is certain that people won’t miss their opportunity to be a part of this historic election. “Everybody who registered is going to vote I believe this year,” she says. “Everybody’s still standing in the lines, making sure they get their votes counted.”
Even Harris’ 9-year-old son is feeling the election spirit. “My oldest son was so excited he asked me if he could go and vote, and I told him no, he has to wait until he’s 18 years old.”
